![]() Adored by fans across the world, Veil of Maya is a front-runner in the cult fandom of today’s ever-heavier scene.įor our friends who live in countries where YouTube is blocked, watch the session on Vimeo. The band delivers sickening riffs, bewildering song structure and super low bass tones while sharpening a more “progressive aggressive” take on modern metal. Brandon Butler’s vocals start in deep, unnerving growls and crescendo into high, sorrowful screams. The consistent blast beats are an electric surge that anchors their ravaging sound. Elements of death metal with theatrical samples that transition between each live song form the full-frontal assault of savage guitar work. ![]() Matriarch is easily one of the most professionally produced metal records on the market today, in my opinion.Crafted by the mind of Marc Okubo, Veil of Maya is known for their heavy and intricate, guitar-laden metal. It's gritty, raw & organic, yet Taylor was able to keep it polished & tight. Regardless of the music run-time/fulfillment, Taylor Larson did an impeccable job producing this record. Does anyone else feel similar, or is this simply a factor that is attributed the signature Veil of Maya sound? While the songs are good I feel some of them are incomplete, or simply don't make sense. I was sorely disappointed to learn that each song is the complete song within the YouTube playlist. However, I found myself rewinding and checking to make sure that the songs where the correct length. It's a great record from start to finish, there are no questions about that. I've only listened to it once via Youtube stream, so my current opinion is subject to change įrom listening to the singles put out over the months, I expected a little more from this record. Just don't expect old Veil, it's very different. Again, as common with other Veil albums it feels short at 36 minutes, but I guess that's more of a testament on how much I like their material. "Three-Fifty" feels like the most dynamic of the album and "Lisbeth" is a good closer. The whole "BUT I AM ALIVE" sequence is just sick. "Ellie" is probably my favorite track right now. It's a really good jam and I love the effects they used. Some recommendations/high points for me are the "Leeloo" riffs start off the album nicely. The flow of the album is super smooth and it's easy to listen to the whole thing without easily getting bored with a track. The style change was easy for me to get used to because I listen to Periphery already. It makes the song feel way too repetitive when the instrumentals are actually awesome and have the most Old Veil tone besides "Teleute". ![]() This makes us miss out on awesome breakdowns like Common Man's "Pillars" or 's "Unbreakable". ![]() Some minor nit picky things I don't like: The few iconic Veil "Egyptian" distortion sounds that are in Matriarch feel drowned out and should be more pronounced, instead they're lost in the mix behind vocals. I guess it only makes sense since Misha produced the album. I have to keep reminding myself that I'm not listening to a new Periphery album. The only real issue I have with the album are the vocals sound too damn much like Spencer's from Periphery. Though the style change does reflect well with their new vocalist, Lukas. Is it the same deathcore Veil that people love? No, it's not. Matriarch is really good considering they basically jumped genres. Eclipse was good but it has some forgettable filler. Common Man's and are two of my favorite records ever. ![]()
